The fluid to be cooled (usually water) flows through the external heat exchanger without coming into direct contact with the external air, preventing dirt or pollution from entering the primary water circuit.

At the same time in the tower, the fan located in the upper part, intakes air in counterflow to the water, thereby releasing the latent heat of evaporation into the atmosphere. The rest of the cooled water is impulsed from the tray by means of a pump to the exchanger.
The heat dissipation is carried out in the exchanger, in whose plates the water from the tower and the fluid to be cooled are interleaved.
